The sweet spot: 12 to 18 months out
Luxury ships are small, so there are only a handful of top suites on each sailing. For popular trips like a summer Mediterranean voyage, Alaska, or holiday sailings, booking 12 to 18 months ahead gives you the widest choice of cabins and dates.
When booking even earlier makes sense
- You want a specific suite. Owner's suites and signature categories can sell out very early.
- You're traveling with a group. Multiple cabins close together are much easier to secure early. (Here's how we plan group cruises.)
- It's a once-in-a-lifetime sailing. Grand voyages and world cruises often open for booking well over a year ahead.
- You're celebrating on a fixed date. Honeymoons, milestone birthdays, and anniversaries don't move, so lock in your ship first.

What about last-minute deals?
They do happen, but on luxury lines they tend to be for whatever cabins are left, not the best ones. If you're flexible on dates, cabin, and destination, last-minute can work. If you have specific wishes, it's a gamble.
Watch for "wave season"
Many cruise lines roll out some of their most attractive promotions in the first few months of the year, often called wave season. These can include upgraded amenities, onboard credit, or reduced deposits. It's a great time to book, but don't let waiting for a promotion cost you the suite you really want.
